Hillsborough County recently issued the following announcement.

Hillsborough County is now accepting applications for the Historic Preservation Challenge Grant Program for the fiscal year 2022 cycle of grants. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 6, at 5 p.m. The grant application process is conducted entirely online.

The Historic Preservation Challenge Grant Program promotes historic preservation, heritage tourism, and economic development in Hillsborough County. Available grant funds are awarded to selected applicants on a minimum of a one-to-one matching basis, not to exceed an award of more than $250,000 per applicant, per project, in any County budget year. The grants are for the reimbursement of approved cash expenses.

Project eligibility

Projects eligible for funding must be located in Hillsborough County (incorporated or unincorporated),
and fall within one or more of the following nonresidential project types:

  • Rehabilitation or restoration of historic structures
  • Compatible additions to historic properties
  • Improvements to historic sites or grounds
  • Heritage tourism projects

Eligible nonprofits, and private individuals and entities may apply for construction projects. Federal, state, or local governments and other public bodies, agencies, departments, instrumentalities, political subdivisions, and affiliated districts are prohibited.

Only eligible nonprofit organizations may apply for heritage tourism projects.
