Congressman Vern Buchanan, Co-Chair of the Animal Protection Caucus, joined Representatives Don Beyer, Brian Fitzpatrick, and Zoe Lofgren in introducing the Wildlife Corridors and Habitat Connectivity Conservation Act on Apr. 22. The legislation aims to support planning for natural species migration patterns by establishing a National Wildlife Corridor System.
The initiative is designed to address biodiversity loss by improving safe movement between habitats for various species. Supporters say this measure will help protect endangered animals and preserve ecosystems across the country.
“Florida is home to some of the nation’s most treasured wildlife in the country, from panthers and alligators to manatees and sea turtles,” said Buchanan. “Safeguarding their habitats is critical for the survival of these species and the preservation of our state’s ecosystems. As Co-Chair of the Animal Protection Caucus, I am honored to help introduce this bipartisan legislation that gives states the power to protect vital wildlife corridors. Earth Day is the perfect opportunity to advance commonsense solutions that ensure the future of our nation’s wildlife.”
Beyer said, “Biodiversity loss has a major impact on our planet’s resilience and affects our lives as humans. Wildlife corridors are one of the simplest yet most effective solutions to mitigate that loss by supporting habitat connectivity.” Fitzpatrick added that “this initiative will help protect habitat, strengthen biodiversity, and improve wildlife movement,” while also making roads safer.
Lofgren emphasized California’s experience with wildlife corridors: “Especially in my home state of California, wildlife corridors have proven to be a key solution to help species that are moving across habitats due to climate change.” The bill also has backing from organizations such as Endangered Species Coalition and Defenders of Wildlife.
Susan Holmes from Endangered Species Coalition said, “Protecting wildlife corridors is one of the most important tools we have to address the biodiversity crisis… By creating a national system of wildlife corridors, this bill will safeguard biodiversity and protect some of our most endangered species.” Christian Hunt from Defenders of Wildlife stated: “The science is clear – where wildlife movement is restricted, local extinctions follow. This bill offers a durable, long-term solution that will be critical to reversing that trend.”
The act would create a mapping program with federal agencies as well as grant opportunities through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
Buchanan has served in Congress representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007 after replacing Katherine Harris according to congressional records. He previously served in Florida’s House of Representatives as reported by official sources. Born in Detroit in 1951, Buchanan now lives in Sarasota according to his biography. He graduated from Cleary University with a BA in 1975 before earning another degree at University of Detroit Mercy in 1986 as detailed by Vote Smart.
