Congressman Vern Buchanan, Vice Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee and Chairman of the Health Subcommittee, welcomed new actions announced on Mar. 31 by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the Department of Health and Human Services to strengthen hospital nutrition standards and expand partnerships between hospitals and Florida farmers.

The announcement was made during the administration’s “Take Back Your Health” tour stop in Miami. The initiative is intended to improve patient outcomes, prevent chronic disease, and integrate nutrition more directly into care delivery.

Buchanan has been leading efforts in Congress to shift health care toward prevention, expand access to nutrition-based care, and promote policies that treat food as a critical component of medicine. He said: “For too long, our health care system has focused on treating illness rather than preventing it. I applaud the Trump administration and Secretary Kennedy for putting nutrition at the forefront of health care. What we serve patients matters as much as their prescriptions. To achieve better outcomes, lower costs and healthier communities, we must prioritize prevention, champion better nutrition, encourage more physical activity and intervene earlier.”

He also commented on how these changes could benefit both patients and local agriculture: “These new standards and the partnership with Florida farmers are exactly the kind of solutions we need. Connecting hospitals with local producers delivers fresher, nutrient-rich food to patients, supports our farmers and strengthens our food supply chain. This is a win for patients, for Florida and for the future of American health care. I look forward to working with HHS to build a system that puts prevention first and empowers Americans to take charge of their health.”

Buchanan currently serves in Congress representing Florida’s 16th district after replacing Katherine Harris in 2007 according to the official biography. He has held this position since then after previously serving in the Florida House of Representatives according to congressional records. Buchanan was born in Detroit in 1951; he is now 71 years old living in Sarasota according to official sources. He graduated from Cleary University with a BA in 1975 before earning another degree from University of Detroit Mercy in 1986 according to Vote Smart.
