Witnesses at a recent hearing chaired by Congressman Vern Buchanan discussed the future of Medicare Advantage and the importance of shifting towards preventive care. The hearing included testimony from Dawn Maroney, CEO of Alignment Health Plan; Dr. Brian Miller from Johns Hopkins University; Dr. David A. Basel from Avera Health; Dr. Sachin Jain, CEO of SCAN Health Plans; and Matthew Fiedler from the Brookings Institution.
Buchanan emphasized the significance of protecting Medicare Advantage (MA) and transitioning to a preventive care model that allows individuals to manage their health proactively. “MA is a very popular health insurance option that plays a vital role in providing high-quality, affordable care to millions of seniors,” he stated.
The discussion highlighted the potential savings and improved outcomes associated with prevention rather than reactive healthcare spending. Buchanan noted, “We’re spending $5 trillion in the country… It seems like everything’s reactive.”
Dr. Sachin Jain shared personal insights into how early intervention could have altered his father’s diabetes management, advocating for more proactive measures within Medicare systems.
Rep. Buchanan questioned witnesses on issues such as obesity and chronic disease management, seeking ways to improve current healthcare practices. He has been an advocate for expanding treatment options for chronic diseases through legislative efforts like the Chronic Disease Flexible Coverage Act (H.R. 919) and bills promoting preventive health measures.
