Yesterday, Congressman Vern Buchanan, Vice Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, participated in an interview at the Hill Nation Summit with Kellie Meyer from NewsNation. During the discussion, Buchanan emphasized how the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” is reducing taxes for small businesses and seniors. He also addressed topics such as the president’s trade agenda, national debt and deficit issues, and signs of bipartisanship in Congress.
Buchanan shared insights on his experience both in business and politics. “Well, the business is a lot more fun. Up here, I’m doing it because I want to try to make a difference … and really promote small businesses,” he said.
Regarding the “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” Buchanan expressed optimism about its impact on job creation and tax reduction for small businesses. He noted that full expensing and Section 199A are significant components of this legislative package.
Discussing tax relief for seniors, Buchanan highlighted that “88 percent of my [senior] constituents—and I’m sure across the country—they now don’t have any taxes they’ll be paying on their Social Security.”
On trade matters, Buchanan remarked on America’s trade deficit: “We’re running a $1.2 trillion trade deficit.” He advocated for fairer trade deals with allies like Japan and the EU.
Addressing fiscal challenges, Buchanan acknowledged bipartisan responsibility: “I don’t blame the Democrats; I blame both of us.” He called for collaborative efforts to tackle debt issues.
Buchanan concluded by stressing cooperation between parties: “If [Democrats] have something…I try to find a way to get to yes.”
Buchanan has held leadership roles in Florida’s business community and currently serves as Vice Chairman of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee.
