U.S. Representative Vern Buchanan, who has represented Florida’s 16th Congressional District since 2007, addressed constituents about the ongoing government shutdown. In a statement released on October 3, 2025, Buchanan said, “The House did our job two weeks ago to keep the government open for the taxpayers we serve. I’m disappointed that Senate Democrats have chosen to needlessly shut it down over unrelated partisan demands. While we await more information on agency closures, there will likely be consequences for our servicemembers, federal employees and their families, as well as Floridians who rely on the National Flood Insurance Program.
“In the meantime, my office remains open, taking phone calls and assisting constituents with casework. While many federal agencies may face slower response times and limited staffing, we will continue to advocate on your behalf.”

Buchanan was first elected to Congress in 2007 after serving in the Florida House of Representatives. He was born in Detroit in 1951 and currently resides in Sarasota. He holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
The congressman’s office stated that it will remain available to assist residents during the shutdown period despite possible delays from affected federal agencies.
