Witnesses recently gathered to discuss the potential of digital health data at a hearing chaired by Congressman Buchanan. Participants included Dr. Kristen Holmes from WHOOP, Josh Phelps of Winchester Metals Inc., Andrew Zengilowski of CoachCare, Dr. Jackie Gerhart from Epic Systems, and Sabrina Corlette from Georgetown University.
Buchanan highlighted the importance of personal health management and innovation in improving public health outcomes. He expressed enthusiasm for wearable technologies as tools for disease prevention, stating, “We are spending 5 billion dollars annually, and people are getting sicker.” He mentioned Secretary Kennedy’s interest in medical devices for personal activity monitoring.
Dr. Holmes emphasized the role of wearables in understanding individual health baselines: “The promise of wearable technology is that you can understand changes in baseline and how they might be linked to various lifestyle factors.”
Josh Phelps discussed the significance of employer involvement in employee health initiatives: “The first thing is to get over this fear that there is a conversation you are not allowed to have as an employer with an employee.”
Buchanan addressed national health statistics, pointing out high obesity rates and their impact on life expectancy: “We’re spending over $5 trillion … and we’re getting sicker every year.”
Buchanan has introduced several legislative measures aimed at improving public health, including the FORCE-FIT Act (H.R. 3750) for Continuous Glucose Monitoring Systems access and the Chronic Disease Flexible Coverage Act (H.R. 919), which passed with bipartisan support.
