Today, Congressman Vern Buchanan, Vice Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, led an open letter to the people of Florida. The letter was cosigned by 11 members of the Florida Republican congressional delegation. They urged Congress to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and send it to President Trump for signing into law.
“The One Big Beautiful Bill Act will lower taxes for hardworking families, seniors and small businesses, protect Medicaid and strengthen America’s border security. We are committed to seeing this bill become law on behalf of all Floridians,” wrote the lawmakers in the letter.
The bill is described as a measure that will increase wages and take-home pay for Florida families, support the state’s tourism-driven economy, provide relief for seniors, cut taxes for small businesses, strengthen Florida’s borders, and protect Medicaid benefits.
Joining Buchanan in signing the letter were Florida Representatives Aaron Bean, Byron Donalds, Neal Dunn, Randy Fine, Carlos Giménez, Mike Haridopolos, Laurel Lee, Anna Paulina Luna, Brian Mast, Jimmy Patronis and Daniel Webster.
In their message to Floridians: “This is a pivotal time in our state as the U.S. Congress debates passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to grow our economy… We write to express our unified support…and urge Congress to quickly send it to President Trump’s desk.”
The lawmakers highlighted several benefits they believe will result from the legislation. According to them: “Florida families will see an increase in wages…through increased investments in workers.” The Council of Economic Advisers predicts long-run wage increases between $5,800 and $11,000 for Floridians. Additionally: “Our bill makes permanent…the doubled guaranteed standard deduction,” preventing a potential tax increase on average families.
For low- and medium-wage workers in Florida’s tourism sector: “The One Big Beautiful Bill Act [will eliminate] taxes on tips and overtime pay.” This aims to bring financial stability by exempting these earnings from federal income tax.
Seniors are also expected to benefit with additional bonuses added to their standard deductions. For small businesses: “The One Big Beautiful Bill Act renews 100 percent immediate expensing,” encouraging reinvestment within businesses.
On border security: “By providing billions of dollars in new funding…our bill will expedite the removal of criminal illegal aliens.” The act includes hiring more ICE officers and border patrol agents.
Regarding Medicaid: “We are also protecting…Medicaid by rooting out waste” through work requirements aimed at increasing labor participation while reserving funds for those most in need.
Overall intentions expressed by Buchanan and his colleagues reflect their commitment towards seeing this legislation enacted for what they consider its numerous advantages across various sectors impacting Floridians directly or indirectly.
