Edible delta-8 THC products can look like your child’s favorite candies
Federal health officials are warning of adverse events in children from gummies, chocolates, beverages, vapes, and other products that contain cannabis ingredients. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, hundreds of reports to the National Poison Data System have been linked to insufficiently labeled products containing delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD). Parents are urged to keep these products out of reach of children and pets to avoid accidental exposure.
It is important for consumers to be aware that delta-8 THC products have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for safe use in any context. Additionally, manufacturers are packaging and labeling these products in ways that may appeal to children (gummies, chocolates, cookies, candies, etc.). These products may be purchased online and at convenience stores and gas stations, where there may not be age limits on who can purchase them.
Since product packaging for delta-8 THC products can look like regular snacks, candies, and other edible items, Hillsborough County Code Enforcement is working with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and other community partners to educate local retailers about state requirements for sale of ingestible hemp and encourage them to display products out of the reach of children. In the past few months joint inspections with other agencies have resulted in nearly 200 merchant visits and several dozen referrals to state regulators.
Manufacturers of delta-8 THC edibles are packaging and labeling these products in ways that may appeal to children, often looking like their favorite snacks, candies, and cereals.
Recognize and Respond to Possible Poisoning
Factors that influence the type and severity of cannabis-related adverse events include the type of cannabinoid ingested, concentration, route of exposure, and the person’s age, weight, and sex, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There is no antidote for THC intoxication. Symptoms of delta-8 THC intoxication can include, but are not limited to:
- hallucinations
- vomiting
- tremors
- anxiety
- dizziness
- confusion
- loss of consciousness.
