Rep. Vern Buchanan, Chair of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee and representative for Florida’s 16th district, recently addressed a range of policy issues in a series of posts on his social media account.

On July 28, 2025, Buchanan emphasized the importance of personal responsibility in health care spending, stating, “We must be the CEOs of our own health. Our country spends nearly $5 trillion a year on health care, yet Americans are getting sicker. As Chair of the @WaysandMeansGOP Health Subcommittee, I’m focused on prevention, nutrition and Making America Healthy Again.”

Later that day, Buchanan commented on immigration enforcement policies following an incident involving an ICE agent. He wrote on July 28: “It’s deeply troubling to see yet another illegal immigrant released under Biden’s catch-and-release policies attempt to attack an ICE agent. Congress must pass my Thin Blue Line Act to ensure those who target our officers face the full force of the law.”

In a subsequent post on July 28, Buchanan responded to recent trade developments between the United States and European Union. He stated: “A major win for U.S. industries, from energy to agriculture to manufacturing. President Trump just secured the largest U.S.–EU trade deal in history, delivering $1.3 trillion in investment. Proud to support this deal that puts Americans first.”

Vern Buchanan has represented Florida’s 16th congressional district since 2007 after succeeding Katherine Harris and previously served in the Florida House of Representatives (source: FACTS FOR STEP 4). Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota at age 71, Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and University of Detroit Mercy.
