Vern Buchanan, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 16th district, shared a series of statements on social media addressing national security and local preparedness. Buchanan has been a congressional representative since 2007 after succeeding Katherine Harris. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1951, Buchanan resides in Sarasota and holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
On June 9, 2025, Buchanan emphasized his stance on protecting national security through legislative action. He stated that “Hostile foreign adversaries will not control U.S. ports.” He highlighted his vote for the Secure Our Ports Act to prevent countries such as China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea from having control over American port facilities.
The following day on June 10, Buchanan turned his attention to hurricane preparedness amidst the ongoing season. He advised constituents to save essential contacts before any storm occurrence, stating that “Staying informed can save lives.” He directed residents to visit his website and follow local government accounts for further tips and resources.
Later that same day, Buchanan criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom via social media for perceived inadequacies in handling law enforcement issues related to illegal immigration. His message declared “Shame on @GavinNewsom for abandoning Americans while illegals loot businesses…” asserting that Democrats defend these actions while contrasting with Trump’s approach.
Vern Buchanan has maintained a focus on national security measures and community safety throughout his tenure as a congressman representing Florida’s 16th District since 2007.
