U.S. Representative Vern Buchanan, who serves Florida’s 16th district in Congress, used his social media platform to address the recent government shutdown and the ongoing debate between House Republicans and Senate Democrats.
On September 30, 2025, Buchanan announced an upcoming appearance on local news to discuss efforts by House Republicans to prevent a government shutdown. He stated, “Tune in at 5 PM! I’ll be joining @mysuncoast to discuss @HouseGOP’s efforts to keep the government open and avoid a shutdown. I want to be clear: if Senate Democrats vote down our clean CR tonight, they will bear the responsibility for a shutdown.”
The following day, after the shutdown occurred, Buchanan criticized Democratic lawmakers for their role in the impasse. On October 1, he posted, “Democrats forced a shutdown with their $1.5 trillion partisan wishlist, hurting seniors, military families and hardworking Americans. @HouseGOP acted responsibly. It’s time for Democrats to join us, reopen the government, and negotiate in good faith.” In another post later that morning he added, “Democrats vowed to avoid reckless partisanship. Last night, that’s exactly what they did.”
Vern Buchanan has represented Florida’s 16th district since 2007 after succeeding Katherine Harris. Before his tenure in Congress, he served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota, Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
