Rep. Vern Buchanan, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007, has recently used his social media platform to comment on international and domestic political developments.
On October 17, 2025, Buchanan expressed support for the postponement of a global carbon tax vote by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), writing: “The @IMOHQ’s decision to postpone its vote on a global carbon tax is a major win for American workers, consumers and businesses. I commend @USAmbUN, @SecRubio and the Trump admin for their strong leadership in pushing back against this UN scheme.”
Later that same day, Buchanan criticized Democratic plans for nationwide rallies. He stated: “Democrats are planning 2,500+ ‘No Kings’ rallies tomorrow, organized by the far-left groups that called the shots behind the scenes for Democrats to shut down the government. While they take to the streets, @HouseGOP is focused on the American People.”
On October 18, 2025, Buchanan continued his critique of Democratic-led protests amid an ongoing government shutdown: “Democrats are holding ‘Hate America’ rallies across the country, protesting our nation’s values instead of working to end the shutdown they caused. Every American has the right to free speech—and these folks should be using it to call on their party to reopen the government.”
Vern Buchanan has been active in federal politics since replacing Katherine Harris in Congress in 2007. Before his tenure in Washington D.C., he served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota, Buchanan graduated from Cleary University with a BA and later from University of Detroit Mercy.
