U.S. Congressman Vern Buchanan, who represents Florida’s 16th district and has served in Congress since 2007, posted a series of tweets on October 9 and 10 criticizing Democrats over the ongoing federal government shutdown.
On October 9, Buchanan wrote, “Democrats are bragging that ‘every day gets better’ for them while federal workers go without pay and military families turn to food pantries. Tone-deaf. Out of touch. Unacceptable. Democrats need to stop playing politics and join Republicans to fund the government”.
The following day, he continued his criticism with another post: “Democrats’ shutdown is costing Florida millions of dollars and forcing federal workers and troops to go without pay. Democrats must pass @HouseGOP’s clean CR to reopen the government and put hardworking families first. Read my @HeraldTribune op-ed: https://t.co/gPPp1K29sA https://t.co/xJEptIWgid” (October 10).
Later on October 10, Buchanan addressed the impact on military personnel: “Even as servicemembers prepare to miss paychecks, Democrats admit they’re willing to drag this shutdown out for weeks to protect their partisan agenda to give health care to illegals. It’s time for Senate Democrats to stop the political games.”
Vern Buchanan has represented Florida’s 16th congressional district since replacing Katherine Harris in 2007 and previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. He was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1951 and currently resides in Sarasota at age 71. Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University (BA) and the University of Detroit Mercy.
The recent government shutdown has resulted in unpaid wages for federal employees and military families relying on food pantries, according to Buchanan’s statements online.
