Rep. Vern Buchanan, who represents Florida’s 16th district in the U.S. Congress, used his social media platform on October 2, 2025, to comment on ongoing negotiations related to a potential government shutdown and the passage of a continuing resolution (CR).
In a post made at 15:55 UTC, Buchanan stated, “Democrats have the chance to act responsibly and keep America open. Instead, they are choosing politics over the American people they were elected to serve.”
Later that day, at 18:10 UTC, he referenced recent legislative action by House Republicans: “.@HouseGOP passed a clean CR to keep the government open and protect patients. We want to strengthen health care and improve patient outcomes. Democrats want handouts for the wealthy and illegal aliens.”
At 19:51 UTC, Buchanan addressed the economic impact of a government shutdown: “Every day of a shutdown means $400 million drained from hardworking Americans. All because Democrats would rather punish taxpayers than govern.”
Vern Buchanan has represented Florida’s 16th District in Congress since 2007 after succeeding Katherine Harris. He previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota, Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
