Rep. Vern Buchanan, who represents Florida’s 16th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on October 6, 2025, criticizing Democratic lawmakers over the ongoing government shutdown and their stance on Medicaid reforms.
In a post made at 15:16 UTC, Buchanan stated, “.@SpeakerJohnson is exactly right. Democrats’ proposal would repeal commonsense Medicaid reforms to restore taxpayer-funded health care for illegal aliens. We will not be held hostage by the Left’s reckless $1.5 trillion spending spree.”
Later that day at 17:41 UTC, he continued his criticism by posting, “This is what Democrats shut the government down for. They’re demanding taxpayer-funded health care for illegal aliens and holding America hostage until they get it. @HouseGOP already passed a clean CR to keep the government open. It’s time for Democrats to do their job.”
By evening at 20:05 UTC, Buchanan highlighted local impacts of the shutdown with another post: “Democrats need to realize the damage their shutdown is causing in our communities. Florida’s farmers are feeling the impact firsthand with critical programs frozen, disaster aid delayed and vital support for crops at risk.”
Vern Buchanan has represented Florida’s 16th District since 2007 after succeeding Katherine Harris and previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. He was born in Detroit in 1951 and currently resides in Sarasota. Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
