Rep. Vern Buchanan, U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007, addressed recent legislative developments and his views on the government shutdown in a series of posts on October 1, 2025.
On October 1, Buchanan posted, “Yesterday, I joined @wusf to discuss how @HouseGOP voted to keep the government open with a clean CR. Make no mistake: it was Democrats who came to the table at the 11th hour and are holding our government hostage.”
Later that day, he highlighted concerns regarding federal flood insurance during hurricane season. In his post from October 1 at 18:55 UTC, Buchanan wrote, “By forcing a shutdown, Democrats have endangered flood insurance for hundreds of thousands of Floridians when families need it most. Hurricane season demands preparation, not political games.”
In another statement made on October 1 at 21:36 UTC, Buchanan reiterated his position on negotiations in Congress. He stated, “Democrats only came the table a week ago with a list of partisan demands. @HouseGOP wants to negotiate in good faith, but we need time to be fiscally responsible—not a $1.5T partisan wishlist.”
Vern Buchanan has served in Congress since replacing Katherine Harris in 2007 and previously held office in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota, Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
