Rep. Vern Buchanan, who represents Florida’s 16th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of updates on July 18, 2025, highlighting legislative efforts to support seniors, the military, and nutrition reform.

In a post made at 13:12 UTC on July 18, Buchanan stated: “With nearly 200K seniors in my district, I’m proud to deliver real relief for our senior community.

Seniors are being taxed twice on the benefits they’ve earned. Under the “One Big, Beautiful Bill,” 88% of seniors who receive Social Security will pay no taxes on their benefits.”

Later that day at 15:17 UTC, Buchanan shared another update about defense funding legislation: “Proud that six of my proposals were included in the @DeptofDefense funding bill to support our troops and ensure our military remains the world’s preeminent fighting force.

In the words of General MacArthur, “There is no substitute for victory.” “

At 19:19 UTC on July 18, Buchanan reported meeting with Steven Williams, CEO of PepsiCo North America: “Great to meet with Steven Williams, CEO of @PepsiCo North America, to discuss nutrition reform.

We discussed how the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” includes key provisions that support hardworking Americans and promote healthier communities.”

Vern Buchanan has represented Florida’s 16th District since 2007 after replacing Katherine Harris and previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota at age 71, he holds degrees from Cleary University and University of Detroit Mercy.
