Rep. Vern Buchanan, who has represented Florida’s 16th district in the U.S. Congress since 2007, recently highlighted several legislative and constituent-focused initiatives on his social media account.
On July 31, 2025, Buchanan reported strong support among his constituents for expanding retirement plan access. He wrote, “I asked my constituents if they’d support expanding access to retirement plans for employees. 86% said YES. That’s why I introduced the Small Nonprofit Retirement Security Act to help more hardworking Americans save for the future and achieve long-term financial security.”
Later that day, Buchanan addressed concerns regarding Medicaid fraud both nationally and in Florida. In a post dated July 31, 2025, he stated, “Medicaid was meant to help those most in need, but over the last decade, it’s racked up $1.1 trillion in improper payments. In Florida, we uncovered a $53M Medicaid scam. Thank you, @SpeakerJohnson, for spotlighting the fraud we’re fighting with the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill.'”
Recognizing National Intern Day on July 31 as well, Buchanan expressed appreciation for past interns and encouraged new applicants: “On National Intern Day, I want to recognize all of the hardworking interns over the years who have helped serve the people of Florida’s 16th District. If you are interested in applying for an internship in the near future, apply on my website.”
Buchanan succeeded Katherine Harris as representative of Florida’s 16th district in 2007 and previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota at age 71, Buchanan is also an alumnus of Cleary University (BA) and University of Detroit Mercy.
