Rep. Vern Buchanan, who has represented Florida’s 16th district in the U.S. Congress since 2007, recently addressed several legislative priorities and policy positions in a series of posts on social media. Buchanan, a Sarasota resident born in Detroit in 1951, highlighted his ongoing work related to economic development, immigration reform, and support for law enforcement.
On July 11, 2025, Buchanan emphasized the importance of Florida’s ports to both the state and national economy. He wrote: “Florida’s ports, such as @SeaPortManatee in my district, are vital to our economy, supporting thousands of jobs and keeping goods flowing across the country. Proud to cosponsor the bipartisan CBP SPACE Act introduced by @RepLaurelLee, a commonsense fix to protect trade and jobs.”
Later that day, on July 11, 2025, Buchanan commented on recent legislative efforts regarding immigration and government benefits. He stated: “Thanks to the ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill,’ illegal immigrants will no longer steal taxpayer-funded benefits. @HouseGop is ending the abuse, restoring accountability and strengthening programs like Medicaid for those who truly need it.”
On July 12, 2025, Buchanan turned his attention to law enforcement issues. He posted: “Brave officers are under attack. From Texas to Idaho, those in uniform are being targeted simply for protecting our communities. The ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ ensures we support those who defend us, starting with no tax on overtime for our officers.”
Vern Buchanan has served as a member of Congress since replacing Katherine Harris in 2007 and previously held office in the Florida House of Representatives. He holds degrees from Cleary University (BA) and the University of Detroit Mercy.
