Rep. Vern Buchanan, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007, used his social media platform this week to highlight legislative efforts aimed at providing tax relief and improved healthcare for seniors.
On April 15, Buchanan stated, “Seniors deserve real relief after a lifetime of work. @HouseGOP’s Working Families Tax Cuts deliver a $6,000 deduction for seniors, so retirees keep more of their Social Security income and enjoy retirement with peace of mind.”
The following day, he posted about meeting with Department of Health and Human Services officials ahead of a House Ways and Means Committee hearing: “Great to meet with @HHSGov @SecKennedy before today’s @WaysandMeansGOP hearing. We discussed prioritizing prevention, addressing chronic disease and fixing a health care system that treats illness instead of preventing it. Later on April 16, Buchanan reiterated his support for the tax cuts by posting: “Thanks to @HouseGOP’s Working Families Tax Cuts, nearly 88 percent of seniors will pay no taxes on their Social Security benefits. The WFTC delivers real relief for retirees living on fixed incomes.”
Buchanan’s focus on senior issues aligns with his long tenure in Congress since replacing Katherine Harris in 2007. He has previously served in the Florida House of Representatives as well. Born in Detroit in 1951 and now residing in Sarasota, Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
