Vern Buchanan, a U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007, recently shared his views on national security and healthcare reforms through a series of tweets. These posts provide insight into his legislative priorities and recent activities.
On June 18, 2025, Buchanan declared the end of “the era of appeasement” in military policy. He stated that the House GOP is strengthening the military with $34 billion to expand the naval fleet and defend national shores. According to Buchanan, this marks a return to “peace through strength.”
The following day, June 19, he highlighted a meeting with leaders from St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital and discussed Medicaid challenges faced by families like Krystal and her daughter Lakota. He noted that the “One Big, Beautiful Bill” aims to strengthen Medicaid and improve care for those most in need.
Later that day, Buchanan addressed issues related to drug trafficking under current border policies. He claimed that under President Biden’s administration, fentanyl had become widespread due to an “open border crisis.” The bill invests $21.2 billion in the U.S. Coast Guard to combat drug trafficking and restore law and order.
Buchanan has been a consistent advocate for strong defense measures and healthcare improvements during his tenure in Congress. Born in Detroit in 1951, he resides in Sarasota and holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
