No. 12 Tampa Bests Saint Leo

Tampa University issued the following announcement on Oct. 12.

The No. 12 ranked University of Tampa Spartans volleyball team swept Saint Leo, 3-0, in Sunshine State Conference play at the Bob Martinez Athletics center Tuesday night.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: #12 Tampa 14-2 (8-1 SSC), Saint Leo 6-11 (2-7 SSC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

First Set: The Spartans and lions went back-and-forth for much of the opening set. UT was the first squad to 15 and led narrowly, 15-12. Sorrel Houghton paced the Spartans in the early going with three kills (two from Emily Noe and one from Melissa Elias). Kalli Cors collected four kills in the first set, including the set point. Elias added nine assists to start the match. Score: 1-0 Tampa

Second Set: The second set started similarly to the first, with both teams trading points to an early 10-10 tie. The Spartans eventually took the lead, going on a 12-2 run to end the second set. UT enjoyed a balanced attack with seven Spartans collecting kills in the set. Cors again had the set point, giving Tampa a 25-16 set win. Score: 2-0 Tampa

Third Set: Tampa lead from the go, never relinquishing its lead and cruised to a 25-17 set win. Just nine of the Spartans points in the final set came from kills. Seven Spartans earned at least one kill in the final frame. Final: 3-0 Tampa

INSIDE THE STATS:

Six Spartans recorded at least three kills: Cors (10), Katie McKiel (8), Taylor Fosler (6), Houghton (6), Sierra Rayzor (4), and Mackenzie Dufresne (3).

Cors has hit .500 or better in three matches this season (min. 10 attempts).

Claudia Rivera had 20 digs, her fifth match this season with 20 or more.

Elias' 21 assists give her nine matches this season with 20 or more.

JJ Ramirez's 11 digs are a season high.
