Largo Completes its First-Ever Greenhouse Gas Inventory

6

As part of the City's update of the Sustainability and Resilience Plan (SRAP), Largo has completed its first-ever organizational greenhouse gas (GHG) Inventory.

Using a baseline year of 2019, it is estimated that the organization emits 28,547.053 metric tons of CO2 annually- that's the equivalent of 3.2 million gallons of gasoline! It would take nearly 34,000 acres of forest an entire year to absorb that much carbon dioxide. The City's Buildings and Facilities sector accounts for a vast majority (77%) of these emissions, which includes all of the organization's electricity consumption, including electricity consumption related to the operations of the Waste Water Treatment Facility. The next largest contributor is vehicle fleet (14%), followed by employee commute (5%). Actions to reduce emissions from these sectors will be a key part the update of the SRAP and the Inventory will serve as a baseline against which the City will be able to compare future performance and demonstrate progress in reducing emissions.

Read the full report to learn about the ways that the City will be working to reduce our emissions now and in the future. Want to know what your carbon footprint is? Check out the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Carbon Footprint Calculator.
