Funk Taken in First Round of MASL College Draft | Southeastern University
Southeastern University graduate midfielder Skylar Funk was taken in the first round of Tuesday's Major Arena Soccer League College Draft with the 11th overall pick.
The Alton, Ill. native won't have to go far and will be around some familiar faces as he was taken by the Florida Tropics which are based in Lakeland and are coached by Fire men's soccer coach Clay Roberts.
"I'm thrilled for Skylar to take the next step in his soccer career," said Roberts. "His journey to and through SEU has been so fruitful and to now see him move to the next level is not just exciting for him, but exciting for our program here at SEU."
Funk came to the Fire in August of 2019 after spending two years at Lewis and Clark Community College. He was an honorable mention All-Sun Conference selection his first year with the Fire and was a second-team selection in 2021. He totaled eight goals during his time at Southeastern including a three-goal season this past year.
"Soccer is something I have always been passionate about and is one of the major reasons I moved to Florida," said Funk. "That being said, I'm extremely blessed and excited to continue playing and is what I have dreamt since I was little. I can't wait for this journey with the Florida Tropics.
"I played a little indoors in St. Louis from where I'm from, but nothing like this, so the transition from outdoor to indoor, it's going to be helpful to learn from a great team with a lot of veterans," said Funk.
He will join former SEU players Jorge Navarrete, Julian Hall, and Ben-Avir Espinal, along with assistant coach Kiel Williams on the roster. The Tropics are 1-1 on the season and are coming off a 9-3 win in their home opener on Saturday. Last season, the Tropics advanced all the way MASL Championship.
"To see guys come through our ranks and then move to the professional level speaks to the culture we have here at SEU," said Roberts. "Skylar has an athleticism built for indoor soccer. He brings a talent that we've found in the past in other players that translates well indoors. His physicality and his ability to play with his back to the goal are among his biggest assets as well. He's going to be a good player to grow and develop."
