Today, Congressman Vern Buchanan announced that six of his policy amendments were included in a House-passed government funding bill to support the Department of Defense (DoD). Buchanan stated, “These policies will support our troops and ensure that our military remains the world’s preeminent fighting force. I’m grateful that my proposals passed the House and look forward to seeing them become law.”
The six proposals included in the DoD appropriations bill are as follows:
– An amendment allocating $3 million for research aimed at preventing future military training accidents. This initiative was partly inspired by Army Specialist Panipinto’s death during a road-test in South Korea in 2019.
– An amendment providing $8 million to U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) for enhanced access to resilient satellite equipment.
– An amendment granting $1 million to the Navy for the continuation of the Future Sailor Preparatory Course to boost enlistment.
– An amendment assigning $2 million to continue the Army Body Composition Program, promoting physical fitness within the military.
– An amendment dedicating $2 million towards research into technologies designed to prevent friendly fire incidents.
– An amendment allocating $1 million to the Defense Health Program for research on reducing obesity among service members.
All these amendments were made budget-neutral by offsetting funds from various bureaucratic administrative spending accounts.
In January 2025, Buchanan had eight legislative proposals signed into law at the end of the 118th Congress. These included measures aimed at enhancing military readiness and expanding healthcare options for service members within the FY25 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).
