Valrico’s Medicaid providers reported $66,635 in billings for services in the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment category in 2024, according to figures from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database. That total is a 30.9% rise compared with 2023, when providers filed $50,900 in claims for this category of service.

Medicaid, a health insurance initiative managed by states and funded in partnership with federal and state governments, serves low-income people and families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities, comprising a major part of the U.S. health care system.

Because Medicaid is funded by taxpayers, fluctuations in local billing amounts reflect how health care funds are distributed within a local community.

The “Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment” service group consists of Medicaid-billed services grouped by care provided, determined through standardized HCPCS and CPT code groupings. For this report, each billing code was assigned to a specific service group using a set code prefix and numeric criteria, enabling similar services to be analyzed together and avoiding duplicates for accurate ranking over time.

Spending on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment placed third among Medicaid service categories in Valrico by total dollars in 2024, as overall Medicaid spending rose in several categories.

This category was fourth in Florida by aggregate Medicaid payments for 2024.

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data show combined federal and state Medicaid expenditures reached approximately $871.7 billion for fiscal 2023, making up about 18% of all U.S. health spending. This jumped from around $613.5 billion in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This growth—nearly 40% in a few years—was largely influenced by increased enrollment and greater health care use associated with and following the pandemic.

Major federal budget actions during the Trump administration introduced substantial proposals to decrease federal Medicaid funding and change the program’s structure. For example, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” enacted in 2025, is expected to reduce federal Medicaid support by over $1 trillion over 10 years, add work requirements, and increase cost-sharing, which could reduce benefits and payments for some recipients. These adjustments are anticipated to transfer more costs to state governments and curb federal Medicaid growth, even as the program continues to cover millions nationally.
