Rep. Vern Buchanan, who has represented Florida’s 16th district in the U.S. Congress since 2007, recently shared several updates on legislative and policy matters via social media. Buchanan, a longtime Sarasota resident with prior service in the Florida House of Representatives, addressed topics ranging from national security to women’s sports and environmental conservation.
On July 15, 2025, Buchanan commented on joint military exercises involving U.S. forces and allied nations: “Proud to see U.S. forces and nearly 20 allied nations come together to increase readiness and lethality. As threats grow in the Indo-Pacific, we must stay vigilant. This training is peace through strength in action.”
Later that day, Buchanan expressed support for legislation regarding athletic competition: “Biological men have no place in girls’ sports. I’m standing with @RepLisaMcClain and @RepAndyBarr to pass the Defend Girls Athletics Act to protect opportunities for women and girls to compete in safe and fair sports.” The post was made on July 15, 2025.
In an additional update posted on July 15, 2025, Buchanan discussed his vote on environmental legislation: “Last night, I voted in favor of the Wetlands Conservation and Access Improvement Act, which ensures ongoing funding for projects that protect, restore and enhance wetlands. These wetlands are critical habitats for Florida’s migratory birds and wildlife.”
Vern Buchanan was born in Detroit in 1951 and graduated from Cleary University (BA) as well as the University of Detroit Mercy. He has served as a congressional representative since succeeding Katherine Harris in 2007.
