Rep. Vern Buchanan, a U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007, posted a series of statements on October 7, 2025, addressing issues ranging from the anniversary of attacks against the Jewish people to the ongoing government shutdown and its economic impact on Florida.
In a post commemorating the two-year anniversary of attacks by Hamas, Buchanan wrote, “It’s been two years since Hamas committed the most brutal attacks against the Jewish people since the Holocaust. On this solemn day, we honor the innocent lives lost and stand united against antisemitism, hatred and terror. We will never forget. “ (October 7, 2025).
Later that day, Buchanan addressed the consequences of the federal government shutdown for his home state. He stated, “Each week the government remains closed, Florida loses an estimated $911M in economic output, and more than 150K federal workers in Florida risk going without pay. @HouseGOP passed a clean CR to keep the government open. Now, Democrats must join us to reopen the government.” (October 7, 2025).
In a subsequent post, Buchanan attributed responsibility for the shutdown to Democrats. He wrote, “These are the facts: Democrats shut down the government to push billions in new spending and restore taxpayer-funded health care for illegal aliens. Their plan repeals key reforms, including $50B for rural hospitals and Health Savings Accounts for millions of families.” (October 7, 2025).
Buchanan has represented Florida’s 16th District in Congress since 2007, succeeding Katherine Harris. He previously served in the Florida House of Representatives and has longstanding ties to Sarasota, where he currently resides. Born in Detroit in 1951, Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
