U.S. Representative Vern Buchanan, who has represented Florida’s 16th district in Congress since 2007, criticized Democratic lawmakers in a series of social media posts regarding the recent government shutdown and funding negotiations.
On October 4, 2025, Buchanan alleged that Democrats were responsible for the impasse over government funding. He wrote, “Democrats are holding the government hostage unless taxpayers spend nearly $200 billion on benefits for illegal immigrants. @SpeakerJohnson is right: this is the reality of Democrats’ partisan proposal, and @HouseGOP won’t give in to their demands”.
Later that day, Buchanan reiterated his stance on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “.@HouseGOP acted responsibly by passing a clean seven-week extension of current funding levels to keep the government open. Instead, Democrats forced a shutdown by holding government funding hostage over wasteful health care subsidies for illegal aliens.”
The following day, Buchanan discussed the potential local impact of a prolonged shutdown after meeting with officials at Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. On October 5, he posted: “This week, I met with leaders at @SRQAirport to discuss operations and how a prolonged shutdown could mean missed paychecks for already-strained air traffic controllers. @HouseGOP acted responsibly by passing a clean CR. It’s time for Democrats to work with us to reopen.”
Vern Buchanan has served in Congress since replacing Katherine Harris in 2007 and previously held office in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and now residing in Sarasota, Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
