Rep. Vern Buchanan, who represents Florida’s 16th district in the U.S. Congress, recently addressed a range of legislative and policy issues through several posts on his official social media account.
On July 18, 2025, Buchanan highlighted an incident involving law enforcement and called for congressional action: “An ICE agent was dragged nearly a block by an illegal immigrant evading arrest—just the latest example of violent attacks on law enforcement. Congress must pass my Thin Blue Line Act and send a clear message: assaults on officers will never be tolerated.”
The following day, Buchanan commented on agricultural trade policy, referencing recent changes affecting Florida farmers: “.@POTUS ended the Tomato Suspension Agreement, stopping unfair Mexican dumping that hurt Florida growers. I am proud to have led the fight to protect Florida jobs and farmers. “ The Tomato Suspension Agreement had been a longstanding arrangement between the United States and Mexico regulating tomato imports.
Later on July 19, Buchanan addressed animal welfare legislation: “Animal cruelty must be met with real consequences. As Co-Chair of the Animal Protection Caucus, I’m proud to cosponsor the Better CARE for Animals Act to crack down on animal abuse and support the @TheJusticeDept’s effort to hold offenders accountable.”
Buchanan has served in Congress since 2007 after replacing Katherine Harris as representative for Florida’s 16th district. He previously served in the Florida House of Representatives and is currently based in Sarasota. Born in Detroit in 1951, Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
