Rep. Vern Buchanan, U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007, used his social media platform to comment on recent political events and national issues in a series of posts dated February 24 and 25, 2026.
On the evening of February 24, Buchanan criticized some Democratic lawmakers for their decision to skip the State of the Union address. He stated, “Tonight’s address is about the American people—and they deserve representation. Yet some Democrats are skipping the State of the Union. Disagreement is part of democracy, but choosing protest over representation isn’t leadership. It’s partisan theater.” (posted February 24, 2026).
Early on February 25, Buchanan reflected on the nation’s approaching semiquincentennial anniversary, writing, “As our nation approaches 250 years of freedom and opportunity, we are renewing confidence in America’s future. Promises made, promises kept and the best is yet to come.” (posted February 25, 2026).
Later that morning, he commented on border security and enforcement under President Biden’s administration: “For four years, millions crossed our border illegally and our communities paid the price. Under @POTUS, border encounters are down, enforcement is back and criminals are being taken off the streets. Promises made, promises kept.” (posted February 25, 2026).
Buchanan has served in Congress since succeeding Katherine Harris in Florida’s 16th district in 2007 and previously held office in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota at age 71, Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and University of Detroit Mercy.
