Rep. Vern Buchanan, U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007, has used his social media platform to comment on the ongoing government shutdown and negotiations in Congress. In a series of posts on October 3, 2025, Buchanan addressed the actions of both parties and outlined his office’s response during the shutdown.
On the morning of October 3, Buchanan expressed dissatisfaction with Democratic lawmakers, writing, “I’m disappointed that Democrats have chosen to shut down the government over partisan demands. In the meantime, my office remains open, taking phone calls and assisting constituents with casework. Visit https://t.co/uubLozR6BP for any resources you need during the shutdown.”
Later that afternoon, he commented on congressional negotiations by stating, “.@HouseGOP is ready to act responsibly through good-faith negotiations. Democrats are the ones holding up negotiations by putting politics over the American people.”
In a subsequent post that evening, Buchanan focused on health care priorities for vulnerable groups and fiscal policy: “.@HouseGOP wants to strengthen health care for seniors, veterans, pregnant women and those who need it most while eliminating waste, fraud and abuse. It’s time to be fiscally responsible and put American patients first.”
Buchanan has represented Florida’s 16th District in Congress since replacing Katherine Harris in 2007. He previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota at age 71, Buchanan holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
