Rep. Vern Buchanan, a U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007, has recently addressed health care spending and legislative ethics in a series of social media posts.

On January 12, 2026, Buchanan wrote: “America spends nearly $5T a year on health care, yet Americans are getting sicker. I’ve long said real food must be at the center of health. Thanks to @SecKennedy and @POTUS, that’s exactly what we’re doing with the new Food Pyramid.”

The following day, he highlighted his support for proposed legislation aimed at Congressional transparency: “Congress must act in the public interest, not for personal profit. I’m proud to have helped introduce the Stop Insider Trading Act by @RepBryanSteil to ban individual stock trading by Members of Congress and strengthen transparency.” This statement was posted on January 13, 2026.

Later that same day, Buchanan reiterated his stance on nutrition policy: “The biggest problem in our diets today is junk food and ultra-processed foods. That’s why, working with @SecKennedy and @HHSgov, we’re refocusing the Food Pyramid on real food—protein, dairy, healthy fats, fruits and vegetables, and moving away from the processed products.”

Vern Buchanan has served as a member of Congress since succeeding Katherine Harris in 2007. He previously held office in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota at age 71, Buchanan earned degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
