Rep. Vern Buchanan, Chair of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee and U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 16th district, addressed several issues on August 27, 2025, through a series of posts on social media.

In his first post of the day, Buchanan emphasized his commitment to medical research and treatment initiatives. He wrote: “As Chair of the @WaysandMeansGOP Health Subcommittee, I’m committed to advancing lifesaving research and treatment options. I sat down with Florida advocates with the @NBTStweets to discuss better care for brain cancer patients and the urgent need for awareness.” (August 27, 2025).

Later that afternoon, Buchanan responded to news of violence in Minnesota. In a statement posted at 17:36 UTC, he said: “Today’s tragic shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis was unacceptable. Please join me and Sandy in praying for the children, families, law enforcement, first responders and all those impacted by this evil attack.” (August 27, 2025).

That evening, Buchanan announced new legislative action aimed at reducing tax burdens on service industry workers. He stated: “Proud to have introduced the No Tax on Tips Act—a key policy in @HouseGOP’s ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’—to cut taxes for Florida’s 193,000 waiters and waitresses! Republicans are putting working families first. “ (August 27, 2025).

Buchanan has represented Florida’s 16th District in Congress since replacing Katherine Harris in 2007 and previously served in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and now residing in Sarasota at age 71, Buchanan is an alumnus of Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
