Rep. Vern Buchanan, U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 16th district since 2007, recently posted a series of updates on his social media account covering local law enforcement leadership, pharmaceutical policy, and the anniversary of a key federal agency.
On August 4, 2025, Buchanan congratulated Longboat Key’s new Chief of Police by stating: “Congratulations to Russ Mager on being sworn in as Longboat Key’s Chief of Police! With over 29 years of service, Chief Mager brings the experience and leadership to head the department, protect our officers and keep FL-16 safe.”
Later that day, Buchanan addressed issues related to pharmaceutical profits and international cost-sharing: “America funds nearly 75% of global pharma profits. Proud to join @RepArrington in reintroducing the USTRx Act to stop foreign freeloading that forces American patients to shoulder the burden. I’ll always fight for affordable, life-saving medicines “ The USTRx Act aims to address disparities in how prescription drug costs are distributed globally.
In another post on August 4, Buchanan recognized the United States Coast Guard’s anniversary: “Happy 235th birthday to the @USCG! Since 1790, your courage, sacrifice and legacy have inspired generations. Thank you for your unwavering service and for your commitment to safeguarding our shores and protecting the American people.”
Buchanan has served as a member of Congress since replacing Katherine Harris in 2007 and previously held office in the Florida House of Representatives. Born in Detroit in 1951 and currently residing in Sarasota, he holds degrees from Cleary University and the University of Detroit Mercy.
